Sport & Media

Sports and Media

People has interested in sports activities for many years. People went to circus to watch sports activities in the past. Nowadays, we can watch sports on television and we can follow news in newspapers. Therefore media has effective role in sports. It take a very big corner in media sector.

There are a lot of sports fans in the world and they can follow theirs teams or players thanks to media. Thus sports media can reach many people and there are really big and tight fans. There are some tv channels which broadcast only sports events and there are some newspaper about only sports. In thıs way, we can understand the power of sport media. Why people follow the sports activities so much? People follow because they relax thanks to sports.

On the other hand, technology is devolop nowadays. Thanks to technology, sport can be global. We can follow sports activities in all the World.  For example, when Gareth Bale transfer from Tottenham to Real Madrid about 100 million Euro, sports media and public speak almost three days about this event and there is a conclusion from this information, sports media determines speaking of people in daily life and  change the agenda sometimes.

Most of games have a competition which has rules and beginning point. If you watching your team or player’s game, your first aim is to see winning of your team. This situtation was called false khatarsis. However, there are some games for only fun or benefits. These games intend just game, fun or benefits something like that.

In brief, people want to take information from their team, pleyer and transfers so  sports were followed many people and sports media can reach many people easily. So it has a power. It can direct people and determines speaking of daily life.

Women & Media

Women and Media

Media influence is one of the most powerful economic and cultural forces today.  By deciding who gets to talk, what shapes the debate, who writes, and what is important enough to report, media shape our understanding of who we are and what we can be.

Julia T. Wood describes how "differences between gender cultures infuse communication." Maltz and Broker’s research showed that the games children play contribute to socializing children into masculine and feminine cultures.  For example, girls playing house promotes personal relationships, and playing house does not necessarily have fixed rules or objectives. Boys, however, tended to play more competitive team sports with different goals and strategies.

Gender and Sex

According to John Money's definition of gender is based on his understanding of sex differences among human beings. According to Money, the fact that one sex produces ova and the other sex produces sperm is the irreducible criterion of sex difference. However, there are other sex-derivative differences that follow in the wake of this primary dichotomy.

These differences involve the way urine is expelled from the human body and other questions of sexual dimorphism. According to Money's theory, sex-adjunctive differences are typified by the smaller size of females and their problems in moving around while nursing infants. This then makes it more likely that the males do the roaming and hunting. Sex-arbitrary differences are those that are purely conventional: for example, color selection (baby blue for boys, pink for girls). Some of the latter differences apply to life activities, such as career opportunities for men versus women.
Finally, Money created the now-common term gender role, which he differentiated from the concept of the more traditional terminology sex role. According to Money, the genitalia and erotic sexual roles were now, by his definition, to be included under the more general term "gender role;" including all the non-genital and non-erotic activities that are defined by the conventions of society to apply to males or to females.

Money made the concept of gender a broader, more inclusive concept than one of masculine/feminine. For him, gender included not only one's status as a man or a woman, but was also a matter of personal recognition, social assignment, or legal determination; not only on the basis of one's genitalia but also on the basis of somatic and behavioural criteria that go beyond genital differences.

Gender identity is one's own categorisation of one's individuality as male, female, or ambivalent as experienced in self-awareness of one's own mental processes and one's own actual behaviour.
Gender role is the public manifestation of one's gender identity, the things that one says and that one does that gives people a basis for inferring whether one is male, female, or fits neither of those categories.

Media and Gender

Gender Stereotypes In Disney Films

Disney films have a reputation for stereotyping gender roles in their animations. When comparing female and male characters in Disney films they are portrayed differently depending on their gender. Male characters have been represented as the hero, reliable, handsome, independent and always ready to sweep in and save the girl. The Female characters have been portrayed by Disney as weak, frail, passive, domestic characters that are always seeking a man. It is clear by looking at a timeline how these stereotyped gender roles have progressed through Disney movies over time.

Media can have strong influences over children and Disney can and possibly may play an important role in this influence of stereotyped gender roles. Structural feminism was constructed by Angela McRobbie, who created this feminism by combining structuralism and feminism. She focused on the effects of media on teenage girls. According to McRobbie, there were four codes that implied the reinforcement of the housewife role and the division of the public sphere with the private sphere. Her first code was aimed at heterosexual relationships, emphasizing that “the right man is better than the right job” (Laughey, 2007), dissuading the female population of striving for more than just love. The second code was created by editors of media like magazines, individualising the reader’s problems to make them seem as though they need to conform to the norms demanded by society. This concept is called competitive individualism. The code of fashion and beauty is also important for the reason that appearance is portrayed as more important than intelligence and personality. Women are taught to constantly consume and keep up-to-date with the latest fashions and fads and get into a materialistic mindset (Bunting, 2009). The last code would be of pop music which mostly used the need for romance in teenagers life to their advantage to shape their perception of this. (Laughey, 2007).

Gender Roles

As we grow, we learn how to behave from those around us. In this socialization process, children are introduced to certain roles that are typically linked to their biological sex. The term gender role refers to society's concept of how men and women are expected to act and behave. These roles are based on norms, or standards, created by society. In American culture, masculine roles are usually associated with strength, aggression, and dominance, while feminine roles are usually associated with passivity, nurturing, and subordination .
Role learning starts with socialization at birth. Even today, our society is quick to outfit male infants in blue and girls in pink, even applying these color-coded gender labels while a baby is in the womb. Gender socialization occurs through four major agents: family, education, peer groups, and mass media. Each agent reinforces gender roles by creating and maintaining normative expectations for gender-specific behavior. Exposure also occurs through secondary agents such asreligion and the workplace. Repeated exposure to these agents over time leads men and women into a false sense that they are acting naturally, rather than following a socially constructed role.

Art Is A Promise Of Happiness

Art Is A Promise Of Happiness

When we look at the ideas of Walter Benjamin about reproduction of art, relations between art and technology, we reach to a point which has negative views about reproduction and technological advances about art.

With the newest technological advances, artists and techniques, almost every artwork can be reproduced by some other artist sor computers. We can find Mona Lisa on the Wall of a cafe, or we can put Monet’s ‘’Impression, Sunrise’’ painting on our flats Wall. But when we do these things and make more reproductions, Walter Benjamin claims that it’s harming the real, original artwork. Because according to this logic, it has not the same emotions and feelings in it. Ofcourse we can understand, we can feel things about reproduction but it’s not consisted by the same aura.

According to Benjamin’s ideas, true happiness is real art  it’s mean, every art which not fake, not copy made by real artist. But almost none of us have the original artworks and reproductions are harming happiness of art. We just have which systems offers us. Nothing more.

Is there any behavior inherently criminal?

Is there any behavior

inherently criminal?

We know people procure their temperament with genetical ways. However in this situation, we think that on suppression and pressure social factories are effective a lot. Even if people have got potantial of commiting a crime ,these people can not be criminal with genetical ways directly. Circle of friends where people live in, family relationship, cultural structure of the society in which people live and belief system start potantial of commiting a crime or they are an embowered premise factors. Consequently, we think that people's commiting a crime leaning is effectived from social factors.

Second Lesson's Notes

Jacques Lacan: Real and reality is differernt. Reality is a sybolic fabric and the real is a hole in the fabric. İt can’t explain, just sybolized. It’s traumatic.

S.Freud: In his approach, traumatic experiences have their place in unconsciousness.

Descartes: He aganist to Platon. The age of reason: ideas are just shadows of all physical reality.

K.Marx: Physical reality is condition of our life.  There is a curtain and it’s image of our thoghts. The curtain is ideology. İdeology perplex to true reality, to do real conditions of our lives. This curtain changes the conception of reality.
Example: we’re in an uncomfortable place but we take it as a normal situation, we don’t do anything to change it. Then we do the same things, so the system reproduce itself by our behaviors and actions. We are both – subject and object of this system and ideology. Object because: it affects us, subject because: we reproduce it by our actions. Descartes called that the false consciousness.

Culture industry mass media put in that ideology to the working class brains. Mass media inject ideology of ruling class to working class brain. This stutiation teach that how working class live in capitalist system and reproduce it. The most danger of culturel industry is that it supports to fake necessity for people and satisfy thanks to consume the products of capitalism.

Another part of reality-internet: Virtual reality

Virtual and real are not completely different because they work together. For example, we can transfer easily lots of money from any country to another thanks to one button. So the process is in virtual but it is real.

The different between simulation and virtual reality is freedom. For example, flight simulators isn’t free for you because of real flight conditions but you are free at virtual reality so you can do what ever you want.

Cultivation Theory: If you watch TV a lot and see crime, violence you think that there are a lot of crime compare to reality. How can you measure the crime and violence?  Does mass media has direct effect on behaviors, ideas?

Media Messages: We think that media messages are effect on people behaviors indirectly because there are some criterions such as education levels, age, gender, culture, belief, geography, language, etnic origin factors will be different on people who be exposed to media message. These factors are important to comment media messages. Because of these variances, media messages effect people differents level. How much these process effect us, our behaviors will change as far as degree of effects.
